Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro bring Google Assistant with Bard and new sensors

New smartphones from Google promise improvements for photos and videos; Pixel 8 Pro has a sensor to measure forehead temperature and detect fever

This Wednesday (4), Google announced its two new smartphones: Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The devices debut the new SoC Tensor G3, the third generation of the chip developed by the company. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro feature a new 50 MP main sensor.

In addition to the promises present in all cell phone presentations — that the new processor is faster and the cell phone is capable of doing X and Y in less time than the previous model — the Pixel 8 Pro features a sensor to measure forehead temperature . With this feature, the user can detect or rule out a fever. This functionality awaits approval from the Food and Drug Administration (a body similar to our Anvisa) to be released.

The two smartphones will also debut Android 14, Google's mobile operating system. The new OS brings support for Google Assistant with Bard. Yes, the company is using its generative AI to improve its smartphones' virtual assistant. In addition, Google's AI will have the Zoom Enhance function, which improves the quality of an image you have zoomed in on, correcting those flaws and missing details.

Pixel 8 fulfills its role as a base flagship

The Pixel 8 is the “base” model of Google's new cell phone line. Just like the 8 Pro version, it is equipped with the new Tensor G3 SoC. Google promises that the chip brings high performance and low power consumption.

This model's camera set is made up of two lenses: a 50 MP angular lens and a 12 MP ultra-angular lens. The front sensor has 10 MP. The main camera has been updated for this smartphone — and is the same one used in the Pixel 8 Pro.

The base Pixel 8's screen measures 6.2 inches and has a resolution of 2268 x 1080 pixels. Maximum brightness is 2,000 nits. In terms of appearance, little changes compared to the Pixel 7, its predecessor. The camera bar, where Google installs the rear lenses, is higher, closer to the top of the smartphone.

Pixel 8 Pro promises to be one of the main options for photos

The Pixel 8 Pro is the most premium cell phone in the Pixel 8 series. The differences between it and the base version are an extra camera, larger screen, more brightness, temperature sensor and dynamic refresh rate on the display (1-120 Hz). Even the “raising” of the camera bar position was carried out on Google’s new premium smartphone.

The screen measures 6.7 inches and has the highest brightness of Pixel phones, with 2,400 nits. Like the base version, the Pixel 8 Pro also lost 0.2 inches in screen size. The selfie lens, located in a hole in the screen, is 10 MP — just like the other version

The 50 MP main camera is provided by Samsung. The Pixel 8 Pro uses the ISOCELL GN2 sensor, measuring 1/1.12 inches. To rival Nightography, Google announced improvements to Night Mode, a feature aimed at capturing photos in low-light environments.

The rear set of cameras, located in the peculiar lens bar, also has a 48 MP ultra-wide sensor and a 48 MP telephoto lens with 5x zoom. The recordings feature Video Boost, to process all video frames with HDR+, delivering greater color range. With these specifications, Google promises to be firmly in the dispute for the smartphone with the best cameras.

For this, even a fun (and scary) feature of changing people's facial expressions was presented. The idea is that the functionality is used to correct those photos in which someone blinked or frowned, changing their expressions for a smile or open eyes.

Pixel 8 price loses to immediate rival

The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, which will not arrive in Brazil, are launched with a suggested price of US$700 and US$1,000 — respectively. The Pixel 8 is US$100 more expensive than the Galaxy S23 FE, launched almost at the same time.

On the other hand, as rumored, the Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will have operating system support for seven years — as well as security updates.
